BLUEFISH

Best months: July through October

Average size: 6 to 10 pounds (rarely over 20)

Biggest fish last season: 18 pounds (35 inches)

The best fighting fish in the sound! A full flavor. Excellent when smoked.

STRIPED BASS

Best months: May, June, October

Average size: 5 to 10 pounds (will grow to large sizes over time)

Biggest fish last season: 42 pounds (48 inches)

Not as strong a fighter as bluefish but larger fish possible. Flavor is mild. Can be grilled, baked or broiled.

FLUKE

Best months: July and August

Average size: 2 to 4 pounds

Biggest fish last season: 8.5 pounds (26 inches)

Fun to catch on lighter tackle while drifting the beaches. Delicious mild tasting fillets that can be pan fried, deep fried, baked or broiled.

PORGY (SCUP)

Best months: July, August, September to mid-October

Average size: about 1 pound (10 inches)

Biggest fish last season: 4 pounds (20 inches)

Small but scrappy. Found in large schools can provide a ton of action for kids of all ages. A stronger flavor but very good fried or smoked.

SEA BASS

Best months: September, October, November

Average size: about 1 pound (12 inches)

Biggest fish last season: 4 pounds (20 inches)

Fun to catch drifting over rocky reeds. Terrific flavor and freeze very well.

TAUTOG (BLACKFISH)

Best months: Mid-September through November

Average size: about 4 to 6 pounds

Biggest fish last season: 10 pounds (25 inches)

A bang to catch using live bait in rocky areas. A delicious taste to their chunky fillets. Also freeze very well.
